The Case of Albert Allen
When presenting demonstrative evidence for injury cases in Canada, 2D illustrations are often utilized to assist in educating a jury of the medically pertinent facts of the case. The primary goal of this illustration was to provide the presenter with a means of delivering clear, medically accurate evidence, in the form of a chronological narrative composed of: a description of the patient’s trauma and subsequent surgical procedure, as interpreted from the patient’s scan data and the physician’s reports.
This was a student group project done with fellow Illustrator Adam Zunder, and was limited to the use of 2 boards.

THE BLOOD BRAIN BARRIER
Association of Medical Illustrators
Award of Merit 2016
This Illustration was undertaken with the intent of providing a textbook style introduction to the BBB that helps the viewer better understand its significant features. To accomplish this, the visualization addressed structure by comparing systemic vessel structure to CNS vessel structure. Furthermore, the functional description was supplemented with a relevant application by demonstrating the impairment of the BBB in the context of MRI data.
This project was completed in the neuroanatomy segment of my Master’s Program, the assignment guidelines stipulated that traditional media be used to produce the visuals.

Primate Dentition
For this project I intended to create a visual aid for students learning primatology. Dentition is crucial to identifying and understanding the various families among the Order Primates. This piece displays relatable colored pencil cranial illustrations paired with didactic pen and ink illustrations, to consolidate information uptake by student users

Cardiac Health in Space
For this project I was instructed to produce a journal cover that demonstrated a current topic of interest among the scientific community. I chose cardiac physiology in space since it represents a major potential barrier to human interplanetary travel. I created the astronaut in Cinema4D, and the heart in Zbrush. Adjusting render layers and passes was completed using Photoshop and text elements were added in Illustrator.

Physician Learning Tool
I had the privilege of working on this project with Dr. Eric Kaplovitch and Dr. Mirek Otremba, practicing physicians and researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital. This was funded by UofT’s Educational IT Summer Student Program. My task was to design and build a web-based module that provided physicians with the means of re-familiarizing themselves with the thoracentesis procedure. With the content and supervision given, we produced a prototype for use in combination with latex training models. Shown here are some screen caps of the functional module at various pages.
The design, layout and assets (i.e. graphical elements, and icons) were created in Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop. The Module was built with Adobe Muse, HTML, and CSS.

Carotid Bypass Surgery
I had the opportunity to observe surgical procedures performed by Dr. Thomas Forbes at Toronto General Hospital. The goal was to convey the surgical method used by Dr. Forbes in a didactic way, while applying heavy scrutiny to the accuracy of the content.
The initial diagrammatic sketches were completed in the OR, during surgical observation. Line renderings were drawn iteratively with the instruction of Professor Michael Corrin, as well as Professor-emerita Margot Mackay. Dr. Forbes and Dr. Dee Ballyk (an expert anatomist) were consulted, in addition to reference texts, to ensure the accuracy of the illustrated and written content.
